Cancel the Gilmore Girls

Now that the showrunners/headwriters have left, it's time to put this show out of its misery.

Gilmore Girls creators and showrunners and headwriters Amy Sherman-Palladino and husband Dan Palladino are leaving the hit WB show after this (the show's 6th) season. Gilmore exec producer David S. Rosenthal will take over and run the show. This is a crucial time for the series; although it hasn't been officially announced, Gilmore is expected to be included in the CW's new slate. But this is also expected to be the series' final season, so I ask, Why bother? Cancel this show.

This has been an uneven season for Gilmore. Luke and Lorelai, the shows "just kiss her already!" couple is finally together. At first, the pairing seemed to defy the odds: their comfortable compatibility was fun. But it's become increasingly obvious that the actors (Lauren Graham and Scott Patterson) are not comfortable with each other - perhaps even don't like each other. I could have lived with the fact that their characters show limited affection for each other, but these two seem loathe to even touch each other. It's painful to watch.

In fact, the characters of Luke and Lorelai have totally changed. Luke used to be a likeable curmudgeon who pined away for Lorelei. Now he's a thoughtless jerk, and a bit of a clod. I'm thinking Lorelai can surely do better than this guy. But perhaps not, since Lorelei has gone from cool and sure of herself to a passive-aggressive wimp. Why would I want to watch these two?

Rory (Alexis Bledel) fares a little better. After a brief meltdown in which she left Yale, she has gotten back on track and remained consistent. I might be convinced to be interested in her if Bledel were a stronger actor. Unfortunately, she is constantly upstaged by the supporting players in her life, boyfriend Logan (Matt Czuchry) and best friend Paris (Lisa Weil).

Methinks the Girls are done. I say cancel the series, thus freeing up a timeslot for the much stronger Veronica Mars.

Whoever it is that posted this article had a lot of guts. Seriously, they probally have only watched this season. If you really knew about Gilmore Girls, you would realize that there's much more to it then you would think. Rent the DVD's watch them and realize that it's not over for the girls. They'll make a good comeback. They always do. SO before you say stuff like this... THINK

Karen Woodward here. Yes, I wrote that article, and actually, I'm a HUGE fan of the Gilmore's. To the point of obsession. Which is why I am so disapointed in the way this season has been going. It seems to me that since the Palladino's want to leave, it's time to end the show. I think they've run out of stories to tell.

I feel that Loralei sleeping with Chris was TOTALLY out of character. I hate what they've done but will stick with it. I love the show and think it will end after this year..

I wish Amy Sherman-Palladino hadn't left. This new guy doesn't know what he's doing.

According to Dawn Ostroff, Pres of Entertainment at CW, Dave Rosenthal had to write his way out of the corner that Amy had painted him in. (Do you think she did that on purpose?) and that the second half of the season will be much stronger.

Also, my sources tell me that the entire cast, crew, and execs are relieved that ASP is gone. When "difficult" is a euphemism, you know you're in trouble.

I stopped watching when Chris and Loralei got married but DVRed it last week. This is after a few weeks of not watching which is HUGE for me since I'm such a big fan...

I'm a bit hopeful after last week's episode...

Wow, it's good to see somebody else write exactly what I'm thinking. I've been a hardcore GG fan since 2002, own 6 seasons on DVD, total addict! It actually seems to me like the actors are nor into it anymore! Lauren seems to be barely going through the motions, I can hardly watch, it breaks my heart! And yes about the Lorelai/Luke lack of chemistry thing- they had tons before they ever got together. I know it's hard for any 'shut up & kiss her' couple to keep people interested after the sexual tension eases, but man, they just fizzled. I'm so sad I've been watching American Idol on Tuesdays, but I did watch this past Tuesday. And does anyone else think Rory is not at all the character she was a few years ago? I know she's matured and all that, but she's become miss drive and determination ad nauseum!
(Speaking of which, I'll shut up now...:)

Last year, friend of mine pined for Chris and Lorelei to get together, and I have to admit that it seemed like an interesting idea. Luke and Lorelei are so awkward.

But now... Chris is coming across as so weak. We needn't worry though; it's a safe bet that Luke and Lorelei will end up back together by April.

I just wanted to say that I actually liked the last season of Gilmore. I especially liked Rory's new friends. Lucy and Olivia. I thought they were cool and not your typical Yalees. It was interesting how the writers decided to bring Marty back into the picture and that the fact that he'd always carried a torch for Miss Rory. It really wasn't her fault that Marty was in love with her. However, she should have been honest with Lucy about the fact that she already knew him. I think that by attempting to hide it from her, she made the situation worse. Perhaps, she was simply trying to protect Marty because of the rather embarrassing circumstances in which they met?

All in all, I miss Gilmore like CRAZY and I am now watching the Family Channel reruns faithfully. Hopefully they will have a TV Movie in order to tie up the loose ends for the characters.

You may get your wish for a Gilmore movie. At the TCA pres conferences this week, Amy Sherman Palladino said she'd be open to it. I think the hard part would be to get Alexis Bledel to commit though. She's ready to move on from Gilmore. There was also a lot of strife on that set.

I have to disagree with you about Rory's new friends in the last season. I found them annoying, pointless, and a sure sign that the show had jumped the shark. (Although the shark jumping actually began with Luke's long lost daughter.)
