My Boys reviewWorth figuring out what channel is TBS
My Boys is a traditional sitcom featuring a non-traditional girl.
I decided to check out TBS's My Boys, intrigued by the propect of a sitcom about a real girl. Whenever a cable channel over hypes a new original series, I'm intrigued. It's either so bad that the networks passed, or so interesting that the networks didnt understand it. My Boys doesn't come into either category. It is decidedly a traditional sitcom, but it is very watchable, not kooky or fanciful. It's refreshing to watch a sitcom about a girl who is real instead of a vapid fashionplate. (Friends anyone?) Creator Betsy Thomas (Run of the House - yikes) has brought a sitcom that is not terribly original in scope, but is honest and fun. Jordana Spiro plays PJ, a sportswriter in Chicago covering the Cubs. As the Shirley McClaine among a group of guys, she drinks, plays poker, eats, and generally fails in the girl department. Until she meets Bobby (Kyle Howard) a friend of one of her guy friends, and they develop a mutual crush. That is until Bobby decides that he doesn't like being "the chick" in this relationship, i.e. the one that does all the talking about feelings. So Bobby decides to bail on the PJ relationship before it even starts, and by the next episode he's on to a new girl (probably some girly girl - ick.) And that's why I like this show. PJ is real - someone I'd be friends with. Who says that girls always have to be girly? But what's really interesting is that this is almost a cultural commentary - PJ is of course left in the dust because she can't be a girl. I can certainly relate. What do guys want in a relationship? And do girls have to change in order to be in one? Can a girl just be one of the guys? Let's hope this show stays on course, because PJ is someone I could visit with once a week.
