Season 8 American Idol winner, Kris Allen signed his first record contract after beating out Adam Lambert in what was touted as the biggest upset in American Idol history

Almost 100 million votes were cast in the decision for the season 8 winner of American Idol. For the second year in a row, the dark horse emerged victorious.

In his round during the Top 36, Allen managed to snag more votes than early favorites Matt Giraud and Megan Joy to join Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta, the other two contestants voted into the Top 13.

How Kris Allen Won Idol

Throughout the competition, Allen showed progression as an artist., by putting his own spin on well known songs week after week.

A few of the contestants throughout the season including Danny Gokey, Giraud, as well as Lambert had better performances that were their token Idol moments of the season towards in the beginning half of the competition. Whereas, Allen's moments happened towards the end of the season.

Allen's performances of "Falling Slowly", "She Works For The Money", Kanye West's "Heartless" and his finale reprise of "Ain't No Sunshine" created moments for Allen to gain votes from the audience. The audience backing of Allen proved the judges wrong about who was going to land in the Top 2 and end up winning the whole competition.

The Record Deal

It was announced on KrisAllenOfficial.com, Allen's official website that he had signed with 19 Recordings/Jive Records.

CEO of 19 Recordings and Executive Producer of American Idol, Simon Fuller said in the press release on Allen's website, "Kris won the hearts of millions of Americans with his soulful voice, good looks and gracious demeanor. However it is his passion for music and love of performing that will make sure Kris stands the test of time and makes 'American Idol' proud."

Allen stated in the press release, "As exciting as the last few months have been, I'm really looking forward to what is next. I'm very grateful to be working with Simon Fuller and his team at 19 Entertainment, along with Barry Weiss and Jive Records on my debut album. Everyone's been asking me what it's going to sound like. It will be very similar to what you heard from me on the show -- definitely in the pop/rock genre. I can't wait to get started!"

Allen is in good company at Jive Records. Their current talent roster includes Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, American Idol season 6 winner, Jordin Sparks and American Idol season 7 runner-up, David Archuleta.

Allen's Post-Idol Plans

Allen has already made his post-Idol press tour making stops at The Today Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno as well as Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Most recently, Allen sang the National Anthem at Game 2 of the NBA Finals.

Allen and the other 9 American Idol contestants can soon be seen on the "American Idols LIVE!" tour this summer, which kicks off July 5 in Portland, OR. Tour dates can be found at KrisAllenOfficial.com.
