Glee Soundtrack Available in NovemberMusic from Instant Cult Classic Glee Hits Stores November 3, 2009
Glee is unlike anything else on television, and one reason is the show's addictive weekly musical numbers, which will soon be available to fans on compact disc.
When FOX Television aired a special “sneak preview” of their highly anticipated new show Glee last May, after an episode of “American Idol”, no one realized that the show would grow to instant cult classic status just by word of mouth over the summer. Glee is unique among television shows, refusing to be pigeonholed into the standard labels of comedy or drama. But perhaps the most unique and endearing aspect of the show is the weekly production numbers performed by the cast. The Music of Glee Glee tells the story of the McKinley High School Glee Club, headed by former-member-turned-Spanish-teacher Will Schuester, played by Matthew Morrison. The music used in each week’s performances is understandably informed by “Mr. Schue’s” own glee club heyday in the 1990s, as well as the ‘70s and ‘80s youth of series creator/executive producer/music director Ryan Murphy (“Nip/Tuck”, “Popular”). But as teenagers will do, the misfit kids of the current club demand to be able to perform contemporary music as well. The result is a soundtrack that appeals to the entire range of the coveted 18-49 demographic. Listing of SongsThe soundtrack, optimistically titled “Glee: The Music, Vol. 1”, will hit shelves on Tuesday, November 3, 2009. Although still in pre-sales, the disc is already ranked no. 491 in overall music items, and no. 39 in music soundtracks on Amazon.com. These numbers are climbing steadily, even though the title has only been in the top 100 soundtracks sold since September 10. The disc will include 17 cast recordings from the show, including:
There is no word yet on whether or when a Volume 2 will be released. Some Songs Also Available on iTunesFor those fans who cannot wait until November, a selection of the songs are already available on iTunes, where “Don’t Stop Believin’”, from the pilot episode, hit no. 1 during the first week of its release — a major accomplishment considering it was released the same week as the American Idol finals. Also available on iTunes are full episodes of the show (including a director’s cut of the pilot) and a free podcast. Those who have not yet caught the show can also watch episodes for free on the show’s Hulu page as well.
