FOX Unveils The Wedding BellsA Hilarious New Series From David E. KelleyThe trademark quirkiness of writer-producer Kelley is brilliantly showcased in this new one-hour dramedy series on the Fox Network.
Emmy award winner David E. Kelley has created some of television's most memorable characters, scenes and series. Since his first hit series in the 80s, L.A. Law, to the current smash Boston Legal, Kelley's shows have made us laugh and made us cry, often in the same hour. He's a masterful writer adept at creating ensemble casts of offbeat characters that play perfectly off one another. Quirky comedy, surreal touches (like the Dancing Baby on Ally McBeal) and nail-biting suspense are all standard fare for a David E. Kelley television series. Now, in his new dramedy The Wedding Bells, Kelley crafts a wacky world populated by Bridezillas, woeful wedding singers, runaway brides and wedding disasters just waiting to happen. The PremiseThe FOX network describes The Wedding Bells as "a romantic dramedy about a family-owned wedding planning business dedicated to helping its clients live happily ever after... or at least until they get to the parking lot." (FOX.com) The CastThe Bell sisters ANNIE (KaDee Strickland), JANE (Teri Polo) and SAMMY (Sarah Jones) take over The Wedding Palace, a wedding planning business previously run by their parents. Rounding out the Wedding Bells ensemble cast is Benjamin King as Jane's husband and company COO, Costas Mandylor as the sexy chef Ernesto, Michael Landes as the staff photographer David and Chris Williams as a wedding singer. The ComplicationsThis sisterly trio of wedding planners has their hands full. In addition to valiantly attempting to placate demanding brides and pull off perfect weddings, they're also dealing with their own rather messed-up love lives. Annie Bell is forced to work alongside her ex-boyfriend, the photographer. Sammy Bell sleeps with one of the groomsmen and later discovers he's married. And Jane Bell gets into some steamy situations with the handsome, way-too-flirty chef. The HumorThe pilot episode of The Wedding Bells, titled "For Whom the Bells Toll," begins with a jittery bride on her wedding day. She bolts and the sisters give chase, but the runaway bride eludes them all. She tries to get into her car, however, her poufy wedding dress and long train get caught in the door. When she finally gets in, the dress envelopes her entire body as she drives off. This episode also features many laugh-out-loud moments with Bridezilla (Missi Pyle) the Mother of Bridezilla (Delta Burke) and even, the hilariously ugly Dog of Bridezilla dressed in frou-frou wedding attire. When Bridezilla finally ties the knot, her elaborate wedding reception goes up in smoke, literally. Her wedding gown catches fire from the flaming Cherries Jubilee dessert. The Wedding Bells premiered on the FOX network Wednesday, March 7 following American Idol. The series regular time slot will be on Friday nights at 9:00 p.m. EST. Hats off to writer-producer David E. Kelley for creating what is sure to be another successful television series.
