Ever since the Writer’s Strike ended in Hollywood, the television and film industry has struggled to recoup their losses and regain their momentum. As a consequence of the strike, there have been numerous set backs and constant delays in production which has resulted in the hiatus of many popular shows. One of these delayed productions, Entourage (2004-present), which typically appears during the months of May thru August on HBO, has now been forced to push back its premiere date until sometime in September.
It has been a difficult time for fans awaiting the return of Entourage but the news that has just circulated outside of Hollywood may make up for it in the end. According to Moviefone.com, executive producer of the show, Mark Wahlberg, has stated that he desires more from the hit television show (which is loosely inspired by his early years in Hollywood): "We're doing season five right now. We're hoping for maybe three (or) four more seasons, and then maybe a film or two."
Is he serious? As an avid viewer of the show, this news brings about a true sense of excitement and elation. This statement by Wahlberg comes just days after the show's star Adrian Grenier (Vincent Chase) admitted he'd like to commit to the series for another 10 years. However, as exciting is this is, these are still simply just dreams and rumors (nothing has been committed to by the studio nor by any of the cast members as of yet).
There have been mild hints in the past about a possible movie concoction but nothing has ever been formulated or verified, that is until now (sort of). With the recent success of the Sex and the City film (also a show that appeared on HBO); the plans for an Entourage film may now be seriously contemplated. Mark Wahlberg confirms that the recent success of the Sex and the City film is a key contributor as to why these rumors have increased over the past little awhile: "Obviously the Sex and the City success has opened up a window of opportunity there”.
So when can the world expect an Entourage film? There has been no word as of yet but more then likely it would not occur until after the show has ended its run (hopefully not any time soon). At this point, the show is a serious commercial and critical hit and continues to increase in its viewership. Even the DVD’s of each season of the show are selling like hot cakes with the most recent fourth season ready to go on sale on August 26, 2008 (just prior to the premiere of the fifth season).
Some may say that the show has lost the edge and focus it once had when it first began four years ago but to be honest; a bad season of Entourage is a heck of a lot better then most other television shows on the air at the present moment.
Hopefully, these aspirations by Wahlberg about a future film do come true because it would be wonderful to watch the boys from Queens up on the big screen for once rather then every Sunday night on the idiot box.
