American Idol's Top 5 Turns into Top 4 Eliminating Matt GiraudRat Pack Standards Mentored by Jamie Foxx
The week's theme was Rat Pack standards, and the Top 5 turned out arguably the best performance show of the season after being mentored by actor/singer Jamie Foxx.
Due to the mentor time with Foxx, the Idol contestants were to perform one song, instead of the normal two songs usually performed in past seasons. Kris AllenUp first was this season's heartthrob, Kris Allen, who performed "The Way You Look Tonight". Allen received a huge standing ovation from the crowd after delivering another solid performance. Judge Jackson told Allen, "I personally think that this is your best performance to date and way to do it tonight! You took your time, you told a story, you had had some R&B stylings. Mad nice vocals tonight!" Judge Simon Cowell had a difference of opinion about Allen's performance. Cowell told him that the performance was, "a little bit wet." Cowell went on to say, "I don't get the feeling from you tonight that you can win this competition." Allen took in the critique with a smile as host, Ryan Seacrest gave out his voting numbers. Allison IrahetaThe youngest contestant, Allison Iraheta performed her first ballad of the season with "Someone To Watch Over Me". Iraheta softened her look for the performance, combining some black tresses into her token bright red hair. Her outfit was toned down with a black corset paired with a black and white skirt. "If that doesn't land you in the finals, I don't know what will, " judge Kara DioGuardi said during her critique. Judge Paula Abdul said, "Allison, I can't tell you, I have been waiting so long to hear how you would approach a ballad." Abdul continued to say, "What you delivered tonight had an innocent sensibility that was both alluring and very tender." Again it was Coweel that didn't seem to see eye-to-eye with the other judges, asking Iraheta, "Do you think that you can win the competition at this stage?" A stunned Iraheta responded with, "You know, I think I can. I think all of us have that chance right now." Cowell responded by saying, "I asked the question, because I don't feel that belief in you still." Matt GiraudContestant Matt Giraud was still out to prove that he belonged in the competition, after being the first contestant in Idol history to be saved from elimination during the Top 7. Giraud, who performed, "My Funny Valentine" had some pitch problems throughout his performance, but managed to hit a solid glory note at the end. Cowell said, "I thought you were absolutely brilliant." Danny GokeyContestant Danny Gokey, mixed it up by beginning his performance of "Come Rain or Come Shine" with a calm swagger, saving his big, showstopping notes for the finish, nailing every note. "You had swag tonight," DioGuardi told Gokey during her critique. Abdul said to Gokey, "And the best thing about you Danny, that I can tell that you can see the finish line right in front of you!" Adam LambertStrutting down a red, glowing staircase in a white suit, contestant Adam Lambert put on a glitzy version of "Feeling Good". At the end of his performance, Lambert received nothing, but praise from all four of the judges. Jackson told Lambert, "You are in the zone consistently." Abdul said to Lambert, "You make me feel better than good. With every performance I see, it's like watching the Olympics and you're our Michael Phelps." Cowell told Lambert that he gets the feeling that he actually wants to win. Results NightWhile the five contestants would wait to find out their Idol fate, the show filled time with performances from season five Idol winner, Taylor Hicks, Natalie Cole and this week's mentor, Jamie Foxx. Contestests Respond to Performance Night CommentsAs Seacrest was giving the results to the contestants, he asked Allison Iraheta about Cowell's comments from the night before. "I was like, really, okay, I took it all in. What am I going to do?" Iraheta replied. Before being placed in the bottom three alongside Matt Giraud and Adam Lambert, Kris Allen answered the question about having the drive and motivation to continue on in the competition. "I mean, I wouldn't be here if I didn't think I could win,"Allen replied. Cowell responded with, "I believe what he says, yeah." Allen was the first of the bottom three informed that he was safe to continue on to the next round of compeition. The Bottom TwoWith Allen safe, that left season frontrunner, Lambert and the previously saved Giraud left to find out who's journey in the competition had come to an end. "Adam," Seacrest said, "You are safe. Which means we say goodbye to Matt Giraud." Giraud ended his run on Idol with his head high and compliments from all the judges. "Matt, I have been a fan and one of the best things we did this season was save you," DioGuardi said to him. Parting Words From Simon CowellBefore the end of the night, Cowell gave the remaining Idols some parting words. "You know what, have fun, enjoy it, always remember the people who picked it up the phones," Cowell told the Idols before the credits rolled. The Top 4 will be singing rock and roll songs. Their mentor will be Slash, formerly of Guns 'N Roses.
