The Cast of Glee Talk About their New ShowFox’s Musical Comedy is a New TV Genre
When Fox previewed Glee last fall, the country got music fever. The cast's rendition of "Don't Stop Believin'" went to number 1 on iTunes.
At the summer Television Critics Association Press Tour, the producers and cast of the series talked about the show and their own lives, and how they relate to their characters. The Cast Learns Their Lines, Their Songs, and Their DancesLea Michele plays Rachel Berry, the best singer in the school and a young woman who is intent on a singing career. “I think what's so great about Rachel is that she knows what she wants and she knows what she loves, and that's exactly how I was. When I was eight years old, I fell in love with singing, and ever since then it's been my passion. And I've been dedicated to it since I was young. And Rachel is the exact same way. And so in a way I can relate to it, and I also respect and love that about her.” Cory Monteith plays football player/glee club member Finn Hudson who was the first to bridge the gap between the cool students and the nerds of the glee club. He says that learning the lines, songs and dances for this role was challenging. “Yeah, it was really hard, especially in the beginning because we were learning how to work with a choreographer and shoot the show and prerecord the music, to learn the dance choreography too. So I mean, at the beginning of the show, we were taking weeks to do some of these dance numbers. And near the end of the season, we were taking days. So I mean, everything had just gotten compacted and condense. And it's a huge workload alongside eight days to shoot an episode. So it's pretty much every moment that we're not shooting the show, we're learning the dance routines or choreographing the dance routines or recording the songs. So it's a lot. It's great that it's all good stuff.” Tina Cohen-Chang is played by Jenna Ushkowitz. Jenna explains, “Coming from a theater background, I feel like we're doing so much stock theater every single week where you're performing the show at night and rehearsing during the day for the next show or episode. So I feel like we're doing a musical and doing a TV show at the same time. And it's this whole new experiment, and I think it's bonding us closer and making us work harder and learn faster because it's just so new and fresh.” Getting a Great Reception from the FansLea Michele adds, “I think we were just so happy at the response that we got [from the preview episode], especially how well the songs did on iTunes and stuff like that. I think we were just really happy, but we just finished last week. So we've been in this little Glee bubble of finishing the 13 episodes and working really hard. So we were just really thankful to get to see the reaction especially when we went to Comic-Con.” Her enthusiasm about the show is infectious. Glee is set for a 13 episode season, which has already wrapped production. It airs Wednesday nights at 9 PM ET/PT on Fox.
